Howard Handley Jelle, age 92, of Tucson, Arizona passed away peacefully on April 24, 2021. He was born in Covington, Kentucky, to the Henry and Elizabeth Jelle. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Tucson, Arizona, though recently unable to attend due to health problems. Following graduation from Holmes High School in Covington, Kentucky, Howard joined the Air Force Reserves where he served stateside during the Korean War, being trained as a aircraft radio operator and medic. He eventually joined the Air Force where he moved into physical therapy as his occupation. Howard served overseas during the Vietnam War helping restore soldiers injured in service. He served at various Air forces bases before returning to Wright Patterson A.F.B. in Dayton, Ohio. Upon his retirement from the military service he continued working as a physical therapist at the Good Samaritan Hospital of Dayton until civilian retirement. He eventually returned to Northern Kentucky area for a number of years before joining his sons in Arizona in 2003. Howard Jelle was preceded in death by his sisters Julia Lyle Pilgrim, Martha Deane Clayton, Ollie Dale Meyer, and Lisabeth Gail Ray (known as Libby). Howard is survived by his wife, Catherine V. Roberts Jelle, having been married 70 years, and two sons, David Handley Jelle (wife Vickie) of Tucson Arizona, Robin Craig Jelle (wife Faith) of Kykotsmovi, Arizona, and daughter, Kimberly Gail Jones (husband Mitchell) of Tucson, Arizona, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Howard enjoyed music, especially singing, reading, sports, particularly baseball (Cincinnati Reds), and spending time with his family. The viewing will be at First Baptist Church, Covington, Kentucky, on Tuesday, May 4, at 12:00 Noon until 12: 30 PM with the funeral service to follow. Pastor Mitchell Jones will officiate the service with assistance from Rev. George Staggs. Don Catchen Funeral Home is in charge of all the arrangements.
