Tuesday, February 6, 2018I met Carol around 1975 when her son, Ronnie, and I were in Boy Scout Troop 805. I then became reacquainted with her in 1980 at the Florence Church of God. She lived right across the road from the church and I visited her home quite often with my friend, Ronnie. Carol always had something good to eat fixed and Pepsi to drink. Carol made sure we as young people got to go to Campmeeting in Lexington often spending her last dollars to buy gas to get us there. The main thing that I will always remember about Carol was her simple faith in the plan of salvation by and through Jesus Christ alone and her very good command of Bible prophecy. I attended many many church services and Campmeetings with Sister Carol and her family traveling to many different locations. Sister Carol actually taught me how to play the piano in the old Florence Church of God on Hopeful Road. The song that she taught me was "If that isn't love" in the key of B flat. This initial musical teaching was valuable in that I proceeded to play some, albeit on the organ mostly, and went on to play in churches over the past 35 years. I had the opportunity to visit Sister Carol recently in the nursing home and hospital. The last time that visited her at Bridgepoint, she introduced me to everyone sitting at her table in the dining room. I told her that we were praying for her at church as I was leaving and she gave me a "thumbs up" as I was walking away. I of course had no idea that this would be the last time that I would ever see Sister Carol alive. Her sudden death was certainly a shock. I could say so much more but I will end with I thank God for Sister Carol Hess and all of the positive Christian influence that she had on me as a young man just starting out in the church. When I make the crossing myself somewhere down the road, I am going to be looking for Sister Carol and her beautiful red hair as she worships in that city where the sun never sets. God Bless Ronnie, Rhonda and Jerry and thank you for all that you and your wonderful Mother did for me over the years.
