Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John William Leonard 92, passed away on Friday 12 November 2021 of natural causes. He grew up in London and started working in his early teenage years in order to be self sufficient as well as to support the family. He served in the Royal Air Force for a short time before entering tailoring school in London. His tailoring career included working for Aquascutum, Burberrys, Henry Poole bespoke tailoring on Savile Row, Hamilton Tailoring of Cincinnati and Utah Tailoring Mills. In 1956 he married Inge, the love of his life and together they were fortunate to live in several European cities before immigrating to the US in 1972. He loved his job which enabled him to travel and explore the entire USA and he considered it to be a privilege to introduce his customers to the world of custom tailoring. The Catholic faith was important to him throughout his life. As a young boy, he served as an altar boy, attended Mass on a regular basis, and during his later stages of life, especially after my mother’s death, he became a “Church Nomad”. He particularly liked the Cathedral Basilica Covington because it reminded him of the European churches and he very much enjoyed Bishop Foys’ sermons. He participated in the Blessed Sacrament Bible Study Group, to which he brought sometimes rather unfiltered personal thoughts or comments as well as his British humor. He would fondly tell me about how “I made the ladies laugh again today”. When I asked my dad recently if he would change anything in his 92 full years of life, his reply was “I wouldn’t change a thing!” He loved his work, knew how to enjoy life, was extremely grateful for his general good health, and touched many lives with his generosity, wit and charm. He is predeceased by his wife, Inge Leonard, and his brother Brian Leonard. He is survived by his only daughter, Loraine (Dirk) Sorgenfrey and two grandchildren Jan and Sonja Sorgenfrey. A Mass intention is scheduled for Tuesday, 21 December at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Ft. Mitchell at 10:00 a.m. Don Catchen & Son Funeral Homes, Elsmere assisting the family
